About us

African Caribbean Diversity (ACDiversity/ACD) is an education charity focussed on the academic attainment, career prospects, and social mobility of young black people in London. We focus on state school-educated students, aged 14 – 18, and are now developing programmes for our alumni at university and at the early stages of their careers. Over the last 10 years, we have had over 300 students come through our programme. We have long-lasting sponsored relationships with the likes of The Bank of England, Goldman Sachs, Slaughter and May and the University of Cambridge.

We provide a wide array of enrichment programmes for our students, from residential summer schools at the University of Cambridge for year 9s, to Black history education seminars, to one-to-one mentoring relationships with working professionals.

ACD was founded in 1990 by a group of black professionals whose shared vision was to create a dynamic organisation that would promote the entry, development and advancement of its members into business – either through the professions or as entrepreneurs. In doing this it would make a positive contribution to the African and Caribbean communities and to the UK economy.

Since 2003, ACD’s highly intensive 4-year mentoring and enrichment programmes has brought together volunteer mentors from city-based companies, mainly from multinational corporations, and 14 to 18 year old black British young people from London’s state schools.

ACD has actively contributed to narrowing the gap in the educational achievements of black British youth within government statistics and has, in addition, facilitated creative and practical routes into employment for this underrepresented group. The results speak for themselves:

“All I can say is ACD helped build my character. Being part of the scheme is like having a second family, where Brenda, the chief executive, is your mother and the students and mentors are your brothers and sisters. Your family’s job is to be your backbone, to help you and guide you through life. This is exactly what ACD is about.”

- Aminata Vandy, ACD Student 2009

“ACD granted me access to spaces that allowed me to cultivate life-changing relationships and
develop a progressive mindset, whether this was through: role-models in alumni, empowering Black
history seminars, internship opportunities, supportive mentors, ambitious peers, residential
development programmes at universities and at the EU, motivating GCSE and A-Level results
celebrations, or insightful corporate networking events. Success became normalised and my critical
and logical thinking skills were enhanced. The exposure and knowledge gained and relationships
nurtured provided me with tailored support in my academic and working career, as well as in my
personal ambitions and passions.”
